UPDATE: WARNING ABOUT QUALITY PROBLEMS; Beautiful & Well Designed
by .. S. Cohen (California USA)
NOTE: AMAZON DOES NOT LET YOU CHANGE THE NUMBER OF STARS WHEN YOU EDIT A REVIEW. IF I WERE ABLE TO, I WOULD CHANGE MY REVIEW TO 2 STARS
INITIAL REVIEW (NOV 06)
I bought this about 6 weeks ago and have used it several times. It is huge & well laid out. The oblong design makes it easier to work with large cuts of meats -- they can be laid on their side instead of on end with many other slow cookers. What I especially like -- what makes it worth the $$-- is that it can be set to a warming mode after the cooking cycle is done. It is also beautiful -- very modern looking, not like some kind of 70's throwback.
UPDATE (FEB 08):
I have owned this slow cooker for over a year. I have loved it. The last time I used it, I had a big burned glob of sauce on one side and when I took out the ceramic pot, there was burned sauced oozed all over the cooker. It was a mess. My pot has a hairline crack running all along one side. I assumed that someone had cracked it while washing & went to the Kitchen Aid site to buy a replacement. There I read on a customer forum (and now see here in all the 1 star reviews), that there is clearly a manufacturing defect in the ceramic pots. I called Kitchen Aid and politely asked for a replacement, letting them know that I had read about all the other problems. They are replacing it at no charge for "customer satisfaction". No manufacturer would do that for out of warranty product unless they knew they had a problem. Based on others comments, it sounds likely that the replacement pot could crack again.
UPDATE (OCT 08):
The crock cracked again under normal use. I called KitchenAid customer service and they sent me a new crock at no charge. They said the cooker was out of warranty but the crock was in warranty so I was entitled to a no charge replacement.
CONCLUSION:
That said, there are features of this pot that I like very, very much -- I love the automatic setting (2 hours on high to get to temperature, then switching to low), the "keep warm" feature, and the "buffet" mode. I also love the design and the size of the pot. I would not recommend this slow cooker though to someone buying it for the first time -- I would suggest waiting to see if Kitchen Aid can resolve their quality issues. They clearly know that they have a problem with this device.
As long as KA will keep sending me free crocks, I will continue to use this cooker but I won't pay for any replacement parts. If they don't redesign the unit, I will buy another model of slow cooker when that time comes.
Great slow cooker

After my old Rival slowcooker stopped working, i decided to get one that didn't boil or run so hot. And I wanted a bigger one.
The KitchenAid one cost more (take 25 off with Amazon) but I like that it has a simmer setting that is great for soups.
Pluses: Huge. The lid seals to the pan so no steam escapes. Digital timer. Looks nice. Programmable timer. Cool on outside. Maintains proper temperature.
I've cooked twice with it and the results were excellent.
The prior reviewer commented it was too heavy to take to potluck with her. Well..yeah. Get something smaller for that. It's absurd to rank this product based on that.
excellent slow cooker

My less than 2yo rival slow cooker died, so I started shopping and this Kitchen Aid had so many great features. I love the large capacity for family meals. For its first test run I made the Chipolte Chicken Drummettes recipe that came with the cooker. They were excellent; we especially liked the countdown timer for when the kids were asking how long until dinner!
Then Sunday my family decided about 1 in the afternoon they wanted stew for dinner, so I put it to the test loaded it up with veggies thawed, browned added the meat and kicked it on high temp. at 2 pm by 6 it was looking good. Now for the real challenge cooking dumplings on top. Mixed my dumplings plopped them on left the lid off for the first 10 minutes of cooking plopped the lid on for 10 more minutes of cooking and they were done! This is the first slow cooker I've ever owned that could actually cook the dumplings in just 20 minutes (my rival took an hour and still parts were doughy) Stew was excelent evenly cooked, and on high temp no burned spots.
Ceramic pot is easy to clean- seal on lid easy to remove and wash plus the seal kept steam from condensing on cupboard above cooker too.
As to the weight of the product, yes, it is heavy but it is the ceramic pot adding most of the weight any ceramic crock or bowl of 7 quart size is going to be heavy.
KitchenAid Slow Cooker - worth the $$$$
by .. L. SCHEFFLER (Nevada)
There are a number of settings that you can use to program the cooking on this machine. It has a "buffet" setting to keep food warm - then it shuts itself off after 4 hours. The outer casing stays relatively cool so you don't have to worry about getting burned if you accidentally touch it. The lid handle also stays cool. You can remove the inner core for easy cleaning. May be a little pricey for some, but this gem doesn't disappoint. I highly recommend it if you're frustrated with some of the short-comings of the other slow cookers on the market.
Absolutely worth the money
by .. Customer in Georgia (Lilburn, GA)
I've had several slow cookers over the years, but this is the cream of the crop. I purchased this one for its larger size--I can do about a dozen 1 1/2" boneless pork loin chops at once or a chicken/rice dish for about 24+ people. Everything has come out tender and not overcooked or even slightly burned. I have actually taken it to a covered dish/potluck function for 35; yes, it was heavy, but it worked and got the job done for a large group luncheon. It wasn't that much heavier than any other slow cooker I've transported full; it's a bit more cumbersome because of the way the controls do not fit flush to the heating unit.
This was also purchased to replace a Rival programmable cooker, which I never liked as it always overcooked and boiled things, even on low temp. I was always hesitant to use it when I wasn't going to be around to be able to check it for cooking things too fast, so the prgrammability was almost useless for being able to leave it and come back later. When the liner to the Rival broke when it was almost 2 years old, I contacted Rival to get a replacement--I couldn't--they didn't make that one any more even though they had others still out in the market that looked awfully similar. So, Rival actually did me a favor as I wasn't too keen on the cooking ability or performance of their programmable machine in the first place, and I also was not happy that after slightly less than two years, I couldn't get a replacement liner without buying a whole new machine. I haven't and won't be buying Rival again.
This KitchenAid is very gentle in its cooking and is truly a slow cooker. It does not boil the food on low setting, and after its cooking cycle, it will hold the cooker on a 'keep warm setting' for a few hours after the cook cylce is finished; if you set it to cook for a certain time, and you'll be eating somewhere shortly after that time, within a couple of hours, you won't have to come back and reheat. Also, to set the time, it's digital, so you can set it to the exact hours/minutes you want up to 10 hours, I believe, and you don't have to choose a preset 4-6-8 hour cook cycle if you want more or less time. Also, it's easy to clean in the sense that all but the cooking unit is dishwashable--even the gasket on the lid is removable and can be placed on the upper dishwasher rack.
Yes, it does get quite hot if you touch the metal band right up around the top of the heating unit. You'll learn that lesson once, but I've had other cookers do the same. Pick a spot to let it sit and cook, and then don't try to lift it to move it around--it's heavy when full anyway. Just keep your hands off the top metal sides when it's cooking, and like any hot cooking item or surface, keep it out of the reach of children (including the adult ones)! Use common sense when around any heat source. If you absolutely must move it or touch it, use the handles on the sides, pot holders or silicone grippers.
This cooker is definitely worth the money for the cooking quality, extra features, flexibility, and ease of use. So far, it's the best slow cooker I've ever owned.
